#TEDxSydney - from the couch
The Day didn’t start well – minutes before the event started the website crashed. It was bloody chilly this morning – the first real day that we’ve had a taste of the winter days approaching but, after a week of solid pouring rain a bit of sunshine was trying to break through. Today is also the inaugural TEDxSydney Day, down at the Carriage Works, the old Redfern rail yards transformed multifunctional event space and also home of the Australian Technology Park and Innovation Centre. For those offsite - with the web site down an active Twitter channel quickly points to an alternative video stream for the conference. What's TED?“TED” is a US based not for profit enterprise devoted to the propagation of Ideas Worth Spreading and started out in 1984 as a conference bringing together Technology, Entertainment & Design. Each presenter given 18 minutes sharp – (personally some of the best presentations I’ve ever seen have been via TED videos) “TEDx” is a localised version of the TED experience. TEDxSydney 2010 was organised by bricks to clicks online retailing pioneer Remo Giuffe From the luxury and warmth of my lounge room I sit here in my PJ’s and slippers; a fire burning, watching, tweeting and consuming - I love this ability of technology to reach out across geographic limitations. I hate traffic, parking and being cold. The presenters included Justice Michael Kirby to Sebastion Chan from the Powerhouse Museum and more than a dozen other guests . The topics were diverse, thought provoking and engaging - from challenging State and Spirituality to Life Insurance for Third World Aids suffers . The entertainment equally unique, interesting, skilful, mesmerising – I run out of superlatives - so much brain food in one day. The standout for me – Rachel Botsman and the Rise of Collaborative Consumption.

My previous role had me looking at solutions for the global $3.2T USD building and construction industry – to me, the single biggest market to be impacted by Collaborative Systems. I’ll be watching this trend very closely. As night falls Julian Morrow raps up the gig followed by Mahalia Barnes. 6.30PM and time for a beer – much of this will have to be slept on, the seeds planted.
