I'm having breakfast at a new local cafe - Foodies Deli Cafe at Dolls Point with my/ the very beautiful Kim from http://www.nakedbuddha.com.au - we're talking business and marketing. To survive and thrive in this era of consumer control most businesses have no choice but to listen to the voice of the customer - a simple lesson: No customers = No business. As we know trusted 3rd-party word of mouth advocacy is the most powerful form of marketing to grow your business. Today most of that new customer conversation is now online - Facebook, Twitter, Blogs - and forever indexed and search-able by the great Google. Note: With interest I noticed last night on my i-phone that Google now indexing Twitter in real time - which was fantastic for catching up with the NRL scores while having dinner. Which means - all content regarding your business "has to be as good as coffee" says my good mate "Iconic88". "Reputation Real Time!" Today - you need more than good product, price and service - you need a story that spreads - 140 characters is the new paragraph. Any large groundswell picked up and reverberated - rippling out and spreading. If you're fortunate picked up by TV - still the most reaching mass media. Competition is good - the new battle ground is NOW!Our little local shopping centre used to have only one coffee shop until this week - the new kids on the block - Foodies Deli Cafe - Dolls Point have invested some serious cash - the place is what you'd expect to find nowadays in our coffee centered world - a big shared table, plenty of tables out in the sun, lot's of air etc. The coffees and meals good, again, what you'd expect but we also appreciate the little chocalate coated bean and other attentions to detail you'll see. The service level attentive but our greatest joy - no ashtrays. (I'm happy for smokers to smoke in their own homes but not while I'm eating or within 200m). Now, all they need is free WiFi to make life easier for us mobile workers. WiFi will become as essential as "good coffee" and running water. Digital EngagementI wonder if they'll embrace digital marketing and customer engagement? Twitter. Foursquare etc - like Angela's Vivo Cafe (Australian Digital Thought Leader - Iggy Pintado's favourite) How long before Foodies hear of this blog - ever? How long before online word of mouth launch has greater influence than the offline? Hmmm don't know I'll ask Apple :) Maybe there's no deliniation between offline and online - as Iggy says it's all "inline"

I love new businesses - the passion, the risk, the journey ahead. There's never a guaranteed formula for success but what there is - is "best practice".
